Born in Paterson, NJ, Desiree Monae always knew she wanted to work in the arts. During her career, she has served in various positions for many creative organizations. During her early years, while attending AMDA, a lifelong struggle was awakened. Desiree was constantly reminded of her ethnic background and worried about this being the basis of her acting career. During her last semester, 98% of her class was African-American. She was told this was a strategic plan to give a taste of what students would experience post-graduation in the real world. This left an unsettling feeling in her heart. She thought, “Isn’t acting about portraying the truth in the human experience? Why should my entire career be centered around my race?” It was then that Desiree was motivated to study screenwriting. In 2020, Desiree earned an MFA in Screenwriting from David Lynch Screenwriting program in Fairfield, IA.  During her time in Fairfield, Desiree discovered that she was not just a screenwriter, but also a director. She learned that what interests her the most was the production process, thus the motivation to establish her own production company, Monae Productions. Monae Productions has spurned the release of two shorts BLUFF and CELLphone. 

As of now, Desiree currently attends The New School, working toward earning an MA in Media Management.
